Chapters 51-54 THE END!!

As Will and his father sprint to the carousel, they notice the freaks standing around just watching something. They don't understand why the freaks don't attack, until, they notice that they are trying to get Mr. Cooger onto the merry go round, so he'll return to his normal age. But, they drop him and he turns into dust. Then Jim gets like entranced and put on the the ride, while Will tries to get him off, Jim grabs him and pull him onto the ride. They ride half of a circle together and Will jumps off. Jim-holding both Will and the ride, he falls motionless. While Will tries to help Jim, some little boy tells Charles that the Illustrated man is after him, when Charles asks his name and the boy doesn't answer, he rips off the boys shirt. He's covered in tattoos...surprise surprise. Dark says that Charles can't harm him, but when he hugs Dark, Dark falls lifeless. So Dark definitely just got killed by a hug...and as his tattoos disappear, the freaks come out of their trance and run away, then the carnival falls apart - but Jim is still cold, despite Will's effort. Will gives up and thinks that Jim is dead, and when he starts crying, his dad slaps him! His dad says that crying is giving evil what it wants, and they all need to have fun and laugh. So he takes out a harmonica and begins to play, and then Will begins laughing and Jim comes to....(what a spin) Jim joins in their montage of laughter, but when he asks Will what happened, he cries. Will's dad explains that they'll face evil again, but in different forms. The boys run home and Charles chases after them. THE END!

Chapters 44-50

Mr. Halloway's crushed hand really disables him and as the witch comes to kill him, he doesn't resist because of the searing pain. He tells her to make it quick and follows her directions and begins to slow his heart until he's almost asleep (it gets better) he starts laughing because of the witches appearance. She is completely defeated by some mans laughter. OH SNAAAP! With a smile etched into his face he runs into the night. [Part III: Departures] The boys are under Dark's total control, who tells them to say hello to various people in town. He tells Jim that if Mr. Cooger doesn't survive then he will make Jim his partner. And he'll make Will a...a baby for the dwarf?
Dark hides the boys with the wax figures in the mirror maze. He announces the final act, the bullet catcher, and he decides that the witch will do it, and she doesn't want to do it....oh surprise. So he like...pinches the tattoo of her...on him....like a voodoo doll, and she submits into doing it. But but buuuuut, no one in  the crowd wants to shoot the rifle, but then right before he's going to quit the act, Charles Halloway volunteers. He is determined to go through with it even when Dark jeers him about his crushed hand; like when Dark throws the rifle, the crowd cheers when he catches it. Then he says in order to continue he needs his son, Will. The crowd cheers for will and Dark and the Witch have to comply. Because he's making it up as the situation unfolds, Dark can't figure him out. I guess Halloway like...marks the wax bullet with a crescent moon like the original one had, and when Dark tries to hurt Will by pinching his tattoo, nothing happens because he feels calm. The witchy dies (I'm pretty sure the spell is broken now, since the witch is dead) and Jim tries to get out of the mirror maze who's surrounded by pictures of his father; Will and his dad head over to find Jim. [This next part was fairly confusing on my side] So, Charles Halloway feels threatened by the mirror maze, trying to help his dad, Will lights a match, but it like freaks his dad out. Finally Mr. Halloway conquers his fear and starts to laugh again. And his laughter KILLED the mirror maze! Woot woot. But they still need to find Jim and as soon as they hear the carousel music, they know where to find him. They need to take care of Dark and Cooger still.

Chapters 41-43

Mr. Dark walks into the library asking where the boys are. When Charles refuses, Dark threatens him saying that the Dust Witch will stop his heart and make it look like natural causes. Halloway tries to use the Bible to deter him but Dark tempts him with a carousel ride to take some years off his appearance. Halloway is winded and as Dark begins to look for the boys, he says that he'll have someone fix it later.
Dark is a disgusting man, just and fyi. He tempts Jim (while their hiding) with a carousel ride and tells Will that he put Will's mom on the carousel and now she's a shriveled woman, and he begins to cry and that's how Dark finds the boys. He grabs them with each hand with their corresponding face...(seriously). When Mr. Halloway tries to attack Dark, Dark crushes his hand. He tells the boys that life is only coincidences, and has the witch cast a spell on the boy, disallowing them from speaking, hearing and seeing. Dark orders her to stop Mr. Halloway's heart and walks out with Jim and Will and two of his minions.

Chapters 37-40

Charles Halloway sitting in his library just enjoys being surrounded by his multitude of books. He thinks about all the stuff that's gone down, and is worried about what's coming and what he'll have to face. When the boys head over to the library, Will's worried that something bad has already happened to his father, but nothing has. Will and Jim tell Mr. Halloway about everything, like everything. The good thing is that he believes them and is willing to help. Turns out, this evil carnival has been running since 1846. Mr. Halloway tells them about how the carnival people feed on people in despair. However, there is some hope, because of the fact that Mr. Dark was afraid of Mr. Halloway in the cigar store. They wonder what they can do to fight the evil carnival. Mr. Halloway has this great lecture to the boys about love and humanity and about how these men are leeches, sucking and feeding on everything sad and mournful in the world, about how they seem to offer a lot, but really take everything for themselves. Jim asks if the carnival people like buy souls, but Mr. Halloway explains that like...they don't need to because people just give them away and the freaks feed off of them. He explains that when people hit rock bottom, near death, they'll do anything to get away from it. And that they use the carousel to isolate the people, so their minds are the same, but the are children and have no support system. When they start to plan an attack, Mr. Dark opens the front door, and the boys hide.

Chapters 29-36

Will sleeps for EXACTLY one hour, and the notices that Jim's lightning rod isn't there anymore, (It gets crazier). Will and Jim feel something, and both open their windows, and look up at the same time. There's a balloon in the air! Like...hot air balloon with an alive wax witch in it...who marks Jim's roof with. She's blind but she like...feeds off of emotions and sensations. For whatever reason, I have this nagging feeling that the circus is trying to kill Will and Jim. Anyway, they climb up onto Jim's roof and find this weird mark, and they use a hose to wash it off. (I think that the lightning rod salesman was trying to set Jim up to be found and him taking the rod down was good.) But Jim feels bad for taking it down, and the boys want to take the witch out so the rest of the carnival people don't know where they live. Will decides to use his boy scout's archery set and makes a plan to throw his emotions and feelings at the witch to lure her somewhere where he could take her out. So he runs to an abandoned house, and because he thinks she'll sense his plan, he puts his back to her, making her more confident. But at the last second, when he's about to shoot her, his bow breaks in two! AHH THE SUSPENSE! He runs, jumps, and stabs the balloon, and falls, thank god, he lands on a tree.
It's raining and Miss Foley is transfixed by the carousel music, like she is all out entranced. Jim tells Will about a dream he had that is very similar to what Will actually did the night before....but before Will can tell Jim, they find a little girl crying. Jim is worried when they start talking with her and its totally Miss Foley, because when they go to her house, she isn't there. Well, they determine that it is Miss Foley. Then they find out that the circus is having a parade through town and the hide. But when they go back to find the girl, shes gone!
Will calls his father and tells him that Jim and Will might not be home that night because "they" are looking for him and Jim and Mr. Halloway needs to tell Jims mom. He asks his dad to wish him luck and he does to the dial tone. And he goes out into the new day. Jim and Will hide under this like Cigar Store's like Cherokee Indian...well the grille in the sidewalk. But the parade is just starting...right in front of this same cigar store. Some little boy drops his gum and notices the boys in the grille and tries to tell his mom (stupid little kid). But its too late when the boy gets taken by his mom, because the freaking Dwarf is looking straight into the grille. Mr. Halloway goes into Ned's Night Spot and is being by....none other than....Mr. Dark. When Ned asks what he'll have, he says nothing, but he's looking for two boys. Mr. Halloway leaves when he hears that, and when Ned starts talking, Mr.Dark doesn't listen. When Charles walked out, the he walked over the grille and Jim begged Will to call him, but Will says no because he didn't want his father to get involved. But when he buys a cigar he notices them, and yells at them to get out. But Mr. Dark approaches Charles Halloway and tries to get Charles to tell the boys' location, but he lies a lottttt. And the Mr. Dark tells him that the boys are winners of some BS contest. The Dust Witch starts sensing their feelings but the smoke from Mr. Halloways cigar throws her off and when Mr. Dark asks his name, he is honest, and even tells him where he works....why would you ever?  Mr. Halloway tells the boys to meet him at the library at seven.
Dwarfy man realizes that he saw Mr. Halloway look in the grate and that he saw the boys, but when he goes to look, they've vanished.

Part II: Chapters 25-28

So Miss Foley is wondering about what she's going to do about the whole incident with Will, Jim and Robert. When thinking about her nephew, she says "the nephew" instead of "my nephew", I guess because she knows he's not really her nephew. He promised her something, and gave her a ticket to go on the carousel. She believes that Robert framed the boys in order to get them to leave so they wouldn't interfere with her getting on the carousel. And she calls Charles Halloway....and tells him to meet her in front of the police station.
The boys get dropped off a two random houses near the police station. Then they get into a huge fight about the carnival because Jim wanted to find a way to apologize to Mr. Cooger. Well...it was more like Will freaking out on Jim because Will feels like Jim's going to leave him behind when Jim gets older and junk. And Jim's upset because Will destroyed the carousel. (I decided that maybe, the lightning rod salesmen, maybe secretly wished to be a dwarf and was persuaded to riding the merry go round)
They stop fighting and hide when they hear voices. They hear Mr. Halloway and Miss Foley talking about the incident, and when she asks if the boys are Innocent, where are they, Will jumps up into the window where they're talking and says here. Will, Jim, and Mr.Halloway walk back home together. Jim and Will tell Mr.Halloway about the secret ladders they have going into their rooms and they kind of all bond. After Jim goes home, (after promising to tell his mom the next day), Will and his dad talk about why they confessed to stealing when they didn't. Will promises to tell his dad everything in a few days (after the carnival is gone) on his moms honor. Will and his father continue talking outside about how being good isn't easy and doesn't make you always happy. Will's father knows that Will is wiser than him, and as Will climbs up the rungs to his room, he dares his father to follow and they laugh on the roof together. Will also warns his father not to go to the carnival.

Chapters 23-24

Okay so this chapter, and chapter 24 were super confusing. I read the sparknotes so I could get a better handle on what actually happened.
So Jim was running after Robert, who was obviously going back to the carnival to turn back to his actual age. Jim has this reoccurring dark side, where he is so curious and overwhelmed he just does whatever comes to mind. In this case, Mr. Cooger reaches his hand out to bring Jim onto the carousel, but Will tackles him. And then Will smashes the control switch so the merry go round goes like super fast. So inevitably, Mr. Cooger ends up being almost ancient.
The boys call the police, and when they get there, Mr.Cooger isn't anywhere to be found. So they go into the tent. They see like all of the freaks, and acts...There was a dwarf, who turns out to be....THE LIGHTNING ROD SALESMAN! Then they spot Mr.Cooger strapped to an electric chair, (what.....) and Mr. Dark tells the policemen that they are going to show off their new acts for them. Including, Mr. Electro, (dead Mr.Cooger in an electric chair). Will yells that Mr.Cooger is dead, the medics are suspicious and start to get closer to the dead man, when Jim yells that it's alright which, for whatever reason, the police believe and then Mr .Dark puts 100,100 volts into him, reviving him...with the help of the thoughts of the various people willing him to be alive. Then somehow like all of the circus people were breathing for him. Then Will thought about how he wanted Mr. Cooger to be alive, but more so dead. Then, stuttering, Mr. Cooger tells everyone that he saw the boys sneak into the tent and decided to play this prank on them. During this, Mr. Dark gave Mr. Cooger a sword, which he now uses to dub the boys as asses and fools Mr. Sickly and Mr. Pale. Mr. Dark gave the boys a dozen free passes, and the boys were found huddled in the police car, wanting to go home.

Chapters 18-22

So this is where things get crazier. The boys stumble on a carousal, that says it's out of order. But of course, Jim wants to investigate since its the only thing they haven't seen. Jim gets on a horse, and some man, out of no- where, grabs him and takes him off of the horse, and then grabs Will as he tries to help Jim. Then another man tells the first man to put the boys down. This man is really tall, and his suit seems to be made out of hair...He introduces himself as Mr. Dark, and the man who grabbed the boys, Mr.Cooger. Mr.Dark turns out to be the illustrated man, and shows Jim something with his arm tattoos. Mr. Dark seems fascinated with Jim, and vice versa. The men tell the boys to leave, and the boys run off, but hide in a tree to investigate.
So the merry go round starts up, with Mr. Cooger on it, going backwards. Each time they see Mr. Cooger go by, he gets younger and younger. Then the ride stops, and Mr. Cooger is twelve, and runs off. The boys follow after him.
So, as it turns out, little Mr. Cooger, is Miss Foley's nephew. Oh yes, how wonderful, some twelve year old boy is really some super serious man. Jim thinks its a good idea to go ring Miss Foley's doorbell, and Will tries to tell her, but Jim stops him. The little Mr. Cooger (AKA Robert) invites them to desert, which Will refuses, and so they plan on meeting up the next day. The boys go home, and when they get there, they're in a ton of trouble. Ahhh! Wait, something relatively important, Will figures out that the music on the carousel was the Funeral March played backwards. So the boys are eager to go back out. And theres like...a boardwalk that when one of them walks on it makes a song or something (I didn't understand it) but Will thought he heard Jim play his tune, but when he checked, Jim was just leaving his window. Will follows, as usual. And surprise surprise, Jim goes back to Miss Foley's house. Then Will and Jim get into a fight because Robert won't come out if Will's there....or something. Then Jim spits in Will's face, and they get into a fight. Robert comes out, and throws Miss Foley's jewelery at them and screams Help! Call the Police! Thieves...etc. And as Robert runs away, the boys chase, and now Miss Foley probably thinks that Jim and Will are thieves.

Chapters 11-17

In chapter eleven, the boys are woken up by a train  (in the middle of the night) and figure out it is the carnival arriving. They leave to get a closer look. Well...Jim leaves, and Will doesn't want to be left behind.
So the train blows its whistle, and the boys cry because it has like agony from billions of dead people and howling dogs and....it was really sad. The train stopped at a meadow, and after the signal of a mysterious man, people start setting the carnival up, silently...in the dark, and there was a person in a hot air balloon, who vanished.
Chapter 13, is from Charles Halloways point of view, and basically he sees the boys investigating the carnival. And walks by where the lady who was encased in ice, and notices that the water had melted, he doesn't want to think about it. When Will gets home he hears his father muttering to himself about how at three in the morning, women and children can sleep, but middle-aged men can't...
Next morning, the boys go to the carnival and find it to be regular, no mystery or magic, just a little poop carnival. They run into their teacher Miss Foley, who is looking for her nephew. Then she wants to go into the Mirror Maze, but Will has like...a heart attack and tells her not to go in. And then she goes in, gets lost, and sees some little girl that she wants to rescue, but Will and Jim pull her out....because she starts to drown?
As I said, this book is pretty strange.
Then later that night, Will loses Jim, only to find him....in the mirror maze! (What a surrrrrprise) and he's all mystified and junk. He wants to go back later that night, so Will has no choice but to agree. On their way home, they find a leather bag, not only any leather bag....the lightning rod salesman's bag! DUN DUN DUN
So the boys stay at the carnival to investigate.

Chapters 1-10

So basically, the book opens with two characters, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade. They are best friends, born only minutes apart on the 30th and 31st of October. They are complete opposites. Jim, fascinated with the world ready to run in head on, and Will, cautious and wary of the world's ways. Also they are complete opposites in appearances. Jim's got dark hair, mysterious eyes and Will has light hair, and piercing eyes. Or so I'm told.
They are approached by a lightning rod salesman who claims that one of their houses will be struck my lighting. He decides that Jim's house will be struck, and informs Jim to place it on his roof. The rod has like a bunch of different scriblings to "scare" and fight the lightning. I don't really know, I hope that it's explained better throughout the story.
The boys are enchanted by the vast world of books. Turns out, Will's dad works at the library as a janitor, (it's later explained that Will's dad is sad, depressed, blue).
So they get books and go to this "house" at some corner. I guess it's some kind of sex house because one other time when Jim looked in he saw like...people having sex and laughing. As I said, I really hope all of these random themes are explained, but this time Jim doesn't see anyone, so they begin to head home. They run into the barber, who's crying because he smells cotton candy...um...yeah haha.
Point of view changed to Charles Halloway (Will's dad) who is deeply disturbed and depressed. He hears Christmas songs being whistled...and sees a guy putting up posters across the street. He crosses the street (yadda yadda) and sees a women completely cocooned in ice. There's a card advertising, a carnival (THIS LATE IN SEASON?!) with stunning acts and such.
There's this like divine magic going on throughout each of these events. Like it's in the air, and on the trees and grass. Well the flyers somehow tumble-weed into the boys' possession. Then they see the train carrying the carnival equipment and such.
Will wanted to be with his parents, but away from them simultaneously, (right?). His dad was trying to hide the handbill he had about the carnival. Later that night Will listened to his parents discuss various things including the carnival.
Jim is really realistic. He tells his mom about how he never wants to own anything that'll hurt him, and asks about his father (who's not there). Wanting adventure, Jim decides to climb onto his roof and see what happens if he takes the lightning rod down.
Back to the lightning rod salesmen, he finds the shop where there's that women encased in ice, and he's mesmerized.

Yeah, a lot of things are left open-ended, but I'm guessing, since it's Ray Bradbury as the author, it'll unfold and make sense....i hope
